Ring dimensions are estimates. Actual drip-line radius varies by species, age, and pruning history.

How Much Mulch Around a Tree?

Tree rings need 3–4 inches of mulch spread from 3 inches off the trunk out to the drip line. Enter your ring size below to find out how many bags to buy.

Tree ring dimensions

Inner clearance is set to 3 inches (0.25 ft) from trunk center — the safe minimum distance.

Tree ring reference — bags at 3–4 inches

Ring size Ring area Bags @ 3" Bags @ 4"
Small tree (3 ft ring radius) 28 sq ft 4 5
Medium tree (5 ft ring radius) 78 sq ft 10 14
Large tree (8 ft ring radius) 201 sq ft 26 34
Mature tree (10 ft ring radius) 314 sq ft 40 53

Based on 2 cu ft bags. Inner clearance = 3 in from trunk center. Ring area = π × (R² − 0.25²).

The volcano mulching warning

Never pile mulch against the trunk in a cone or "volcano" shape. Mulch should form a flat ring — level across its width — with a clear gap of 3–4 inches around the trunk. Volcano mulching causes bark decay, root rot, and provides a runway for rodents to damage the tree.

Move the yards

True Temper 6 cu-ft Steel Wheelbarrow (Never-Flat)

Bulk mulch lands in a pile on the driveway — a 6 cu-ft barrow is how you get yards of it to the beds without forty trips. The never-flat tire means it is ready every spring.

Spread & level

Bully Tools 16" Steel Bow Rake (USA)

The flat back of a bow rake levels mulch to the even depth this calculator priced, so you do not run short in one spot or pile it too deep over the roots.

Under the mulch

VEVOR 4×100 ft Woven Weed Barrier (5.8 oz)

A woven fabric under the mulch blocks weeds without blocking water. One roll covers a typical bed run before you spread.

Hold the line

Worth Garden No-Dig Steel Edging (6-pack)

Steel edging keeps mulch in the bed and off the lawn, so the depth you calculated stays put instead of washing onto the grass.

Save your hands

HANDLANDY Thorn-Proof Leather Gauntlet Gloves

Handling bark mulch and pulling weeds shreds bare hands; pigskin gauntlets take the splinters and thorns.

Truper 10-Tine Bedding / Mulch Fork

A 10-tine bedding fork moves loose mulch far faster than a shovel — it lifts a big bite and lets the fines fall through.

Dry Top 10×12 ft Poly Tarp

Have bulk mulch dumped on a tarp instead of bare concrete — it keeps the driveway clean and makes dragging the last of it to the bed easy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far out should mulch extend around a tree?

Extend mulch at least to the drip line (the outer edge of the canopy) for maximum benefit. For young trees, a 3–5 foot radius is practical. For mature trees, extending to the drip line is ideal but not always feasible in maintained lawns.

How close to the trunk should mulch go?

Keep mulch 3–4 inches away from the trunk — never touch the bark. Mulch against bark holds moisture and warmth that promotes fungal rot, and creates habitat for rodents that can girdle the tree by chewing bark.

How deep should mulch be around a tree?

Three to four inches is the recommended range. Three inches suits established trees in moderate climates; 4 inches helps in dry climates or sandy soils where moisture retention is critical. Never exceed 4 inches — deeper mulch blocks oxygen exchange and can cause root problems.

How do I calculate the area of a tree ring (annulus)?

Area = π × (outer radius² − inner radius²). For a ring from 0.25 ft (3 in trunk clearance) to 5 ft outer: π × (25 − 0.0625) ≈ 78.3 sq ft. Multiply by depth ÷ 12 to get cubic feet, then divide by 2 for 2 cu ft bags.

Should I remove grass before mulching a tree ring?

Yes — turfgrass competes with tree roots for water and nutrients. Edge the ring with a sharp spade, remove the sod, and then lay 2–4 layers of newspaper (or cardboard) before mulching to smother any remaining grass.
